NEW AND IMPROVED FEATURES IN ELEARNING

eLearning (known outside of The University of Alabama as Blackboard Learning System Vista 4) has many new and updated features. For a more detailed freature comparison, click here.

NEW FEATURES IN ELEARNING
Portal Entry: The opening page of eLearning has a portal appearance and can contain the following:
  • Course list: provides access to each course available to the user
  • Access to all mail messages for all course sections
  • Calendar (Daily items and link to complete calendar)
  • My Grades
  • Personal Bookmarks
  • Personal To Do List
  • Who’s Online (see below)


Who’s Online:

  • Lists class members who are currently logged in to eLearning.
  • Users may decide to be Online/Available, Online/Unavailable, or Invisible.

Announcements:

  • Create announcements presented to students on announcements page
  • Optional announcement popups when entering course


IMPROVED FEATURES IN ELEARNING
Chat and Whiteboard

  • Improved chat tool
  • Whiteboard with Chat
  • Can have private rooms
  • Can schedule when rooms appear
  • Hand-raising option in chat
  • Create as many rooms as you need

Gradable discussions:

  • Assign letter or numeric grades to discussion posts.
  • View all posts by a student, compare student’s participation to class average, and assign grade all on one screen
  • New discussion types available: Blogs and Journals


File upload and management:

  • Upload multiple files at once


Grade Book view changes:

  • Freeze name columns while scrolling through columns
  • Highlight individual row


More control over links and their descriptions

  • Annotate any link or discussion topic with free text to help students determine how to use link and reduce the need for explanatory documents or messages
  • Put links for discussion topics, assignments, quizzes, and web links right in your content table of contents


Real student view

  • View course materials and complete assessments and assignments as a student
  • Student view updated automatically


More convenient tools

  • All tools can be listed under the Course Tools menu on the left – similar to the toolbar concept in other applications


Improved calendar incorporation

  • Automatically post a calendar message when creating assignments and quizzes
